Ubuntu

Posted on April 29, 2007 - Filed Under Technology and me |

A few days ago I decided to install Ubuntu on my laptop. The network of my school does not support linux desktops and workstation. That’s why I wanted Windows and Ubuntu on my little mobile office. The last time I had a dual boot system it was a lot of work. This was back in ……… a long time ago. Back then I had to have three partitions. The boot partition, window and linux. I had a little program on the boot partition that gave you the option to choose between windows and linux.

Now it was much easier. I still have three partitions. Windows, Linux (Ubuntu) and a data partition. First install windows and keep unpartitioned space for Ubuntu. I downloaded and burned Ubuntu (15 minutes to download and 20 minutes to burn).

Ubuntu has a nice feature. If you boot from the installation CD you get to see it working without installing it first. You can do anything, surf the internet, use Openoffice, anything. A try before install option.

I used my own online help desk for any question I had. Rehuel has been using Ubuntu for a while. He uses Xubuntu because it’s lighter and he is used to do 10000 things at the same time, so he has to have access to all the resources the machine has. I only do 155 things at the same time so I can use the heavier version.

Ubuntu automatically gave me a dual boot manager. When the machine boots I have 10 seconds to decide what operating system I want. After 10 seconds Ubuntu starts. Ubuntu works faster and easier then windows. There are versions of any program want to use. It just takes a little used to. The only thing that would make this all easier is if I had a calender program that could synchronize with my Pocket PC using windows mobile.

In time I will find a way to connect to my schools windows network with Ubuntu. And how to import all my mails etc. into my Ubuntu programs. and then….. bye bye windows :)

I’m pretty sure there are calendar programs out there that can sync with Windows Mobile.

About the network at school, check out http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=278034

    Do you remember Samba?
